Pastor’s Corner – April 29, 2018
First, a reminder that our parish picnic is this weekend after the 10am Mass!! Due to inclement weather last weekend, it was moved to this weekend. It is our community’s celebration of Easter and has always been an enjoyable event for the young and the “more mature” alike. We hope you are able to make plans to attend and join in the celebration. Food, fun and fraternity all in one place. I look forward to seeing you there!
Many thanks to all who coordinated, volunteered and participated in the process of assembling our parish directory, especially Bea Beaugh, who was willing to take on the responsibility of leading the project. At this time, we are putting the format for the directory together and will then begin the publishing process. For those families who were unable to schedule times for pictures, there still may be an opportunity to be included in the directory. Lifetouch, the company who is doing the directory for us, has agreed to schedule another time for family pictures here at the church if we have 15 families signed up for a session. Therefore, if you would like to schedule/reschedule your session, please call Bea Beaugh by Friday, May 4, 2018 to let her know you would like to do so. Bea’s number is (337) 945-7572. In addition, if you would like to submit a family photo not taken by Lifetouch for the directory, please call Bea for information on how to do that.
Thanks again for all who helped make this project a success!!
Ordinations and Anniversaries
Next month we enter “ordination season,” the time of year when most men are ordained to the priesthood and diaconate. Three men will be ordained to the transitional diaconate May 26, 2018 at the Cathedral of St. John in Lafayette. The diaconate candidates are Mr. Donald Davis Bernard, Mr. Randy Joseph Courville, and Mr. Salinger Miguel Istre.
Also, seven men will be ordained to the priesthood June 23 at the Cathedral, and they are:
- Rev. Mr. Blake Steven Dubroc
- Rev. Mr. Korey Ray LaVergne
- Rev. Mr. Stephen Andre’ Pellessier
- Rev. Mr. Benjamin James Pitre
- Rev. Mr. Andrew Philip Schumacher
- Rev. Mr. Brent Lee Smith
- Rev. Mr. Joseph Kyle White
Of course, we are excited that our very own Rev. Mr. Ben Pitre will be ordained a priest and that his First Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving will be here at St. Landry June 24 at the 10am Mass. A reception will follow. It will be the first priestly vocation from our parish since Bishop Michael Jarrell some 50 years ago. I hope you are able to attend the First Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving and reception as it is a wonderful and rare celebration for our parish community!! You may remember Rev. Mr. Dubroc, who served in our parish as a seminarian during the summer of 2013, and Rev. Mr. Smith, who served that same summer in Opelousas at Our Lady Queen of Angels. Please keep these men in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders for service to our diocese.
In addition, we celebrate most ordination anniversaries in the coming months, including the priests and deacons who serve our parish. Monsignor Melancon was ordained on May 25, 1963 and I was ordained on July 8, 2006. We are also blessed with three deacons who actively serve us: Deacon John Miller, Deacon Sammy Diesi, and Deacon Dwayne Joubert. They serve our community in various capacities, and are a great help to me personally and to our church community as a whole. We thank them for responding “Yes” to God’s call. We thank them for their service and remember them and their families in our prayers, especially on their anniversary date. Their ordination dates are as follows:
- Deacon Miller: June 27, 1977
- Deacon Diesi: September 9, 2006
- Deacon Joubert: August 18, 2012
We also want to remember the two deacons who served at St. Landry and have passed to the next life: Deacon Carlo Cannatella and Deacon Arthur B. Lognion. They touched many lives of the people in our community, and we pray for their eternal rest with Christ and the continued consolation of their families and friends. Finally, we pray that God continue to bless St. Landry with such good deacons with a heart for service to our community!
